Version: Mid-movie, immediately after being exiled by Simba

Sexuality: Straight and, as lions generally are, polygamous (though he ~does~ have a certain someone he cares about more than any other)
Appearance: Kovu is a solidly built lion with russet fur, a dark brown mane, and vivid green eyes. He sports a scar over his left eye nearly identical to that of Simba's uncle Scar.
Personality: Having grown up in the harsh Outlands, Kovu never had much time for fun and games. He can be very gruff, to the point of rudeness, but the time he spent with Simba's daughter Kiara helped him begin to find a new outlook on life. In some ways, he is just a big kid, trying to regain the joys of childhood he never knew. At heart, he is a good person, but he still struggles with the dark part of himself, fearing that he may someday follow in Scar's footsteps as both his mother and Simba expected him to.
Abilities/Weaponry: Since he is an adult lion, Kovu has a great deal of strength, as well as the teeth and claws to back that strength up. His mother Zira, obsessed with killing Simba, taught him to be completely ruthless in battle so that he could one day fulfill her wishes.
Weaknesses: Although he has his mother's training to fall back on in times of danger, Kovu chose to disregard her twisted plans for his life after he fell in love with Simba's daughter Kiara. His new perspective on life often leads him to question his actions and hesitate to use his strength against other people in the fear that he will fall back into the darkness he is so familiar with. Right before his sudden transportation to the land of Piaxao, he managed to become a failure in the eyes of just about everyone he knows, and since his current circumstances keep him from being able to do anything to resolve that situation, he also suffers from some issues of self-worth.
History: Kovu is the son of Zira, a lioness who was completely in love with Simba's evil uncle, Scar. Although Kovu was of no direct relation to Scar, shortly before Scar's death, he was chosen to be the tyrant's successor as Scar had no cubs of his own - or, at least, none that were considered worthy of acknowledgement. After Scar was defeated by Simba and killed, Zira and a handful of other lionesses who supported Scar were banished to the Outlands, a desolate waste outside the Pride Lands. Kovu grew up in this harsh environment with his sister Vitani and older brother Nuka, all of them taught by Zira to hate Simba and the other lions of the Pride Lands. Zira intended for Kovu to one day murder Simba and take his place as king. A plan was formed for Kovu to "befriend" Simba's daughter Kiara, and thus get close enough to Simba to betray him. However, Zira's schemes failed when Kovu ended up falling in love with Kiara instead.
Determined to see her plan through, Zira staged an ambush on Simba and made it appear as though Kovu had been involved in the attack. Simba managed to escape the trap, but Kovu's brother Nuka, who followed the fleeing king over an unstable pile of logs, was accidentally crushed to death when the logs shifted and rolled over him. Zira blamed Kovu for Nuka's death, slashing his face with her claws and giving him a scar across his eye identical to that of her beloved Scar. Filled with grief over the death of his brother and anger at Zira's misplaced blame, Kovu fled and returned to Pride Rock, only to find that he was as unwelcome there as he was with his Outlander family. Accused of a crime he didn't commit, Kovu was exiled from the Pride Lands and from his love, Kiara.
If history had continued to move in the way it was originally meant to, Kovu would have been reunited with Kiara and would have returned to the Pride Lands with her in time to stop a battle between the Outlanders and Simba's pride, finally reuniting the broken pride and regaining Simba's trust. Unfortunately for Kovu, this was the point at which he was whisked away to Paixao, leaving all the problems in his life unresolved.
